2018 Eco Day
WED! Yes 5th June of the year has been set aside to celebrate the abundant gift of nature – The Environment.
WED stands for World Environment Day which was first held in Spokane, United States, 1974 (44 years) and since then has expanded into several countries making it an international event (see Wikipedia.org).
WED is also sometimes referred to as “Eco Day”, it has provided a platform to discuss issues bothering our ecosystem and its biodiversity. Over the years, many concern individuals, organisations, government bodies and social groups have been taking part in the collective effort to sanitize our environment through divert means such as public outreach on air pollution, water pollution, effect of overpopulation, food shortage, global warming, etc. It’s a note worthy to mention here that vast number of volunteers in Eco Day event remain NGOs who’s vested interest is to protect the ecosystem for a sustainable development.

Thanks to the United Nation Environment’s efforts in Eco Day flagship. This World Environment Day, UN Environment is calling on citizens, companies and civil society groups to get out and organize cleanups in their communities. Working with partners, we think it’s possible to make 2018 the world’s biggest-ever worldwide cleanup and we’re keen to showcase all the amazing work the community will be doing to #BeatPlasticPollution.

In line with the “Eco Day” 2018, OFEPIA will be organizing events all across African cities to mark the “Eco Day 2018” we this seize the opportunity to encourage all volunteers through the local leaders within their locality to actively take part in this year’s World Environment Day (WED) by organizing a 2-3 hours event.
In African cities, we have environmental issues bothering each community at different capacities and such varies in scope, we therefore advice each leader to carefully analyze the community’s environmental issues to spot out a potential area that require impactful action by OFEPIA “Eco Day event”.
Here are some suggestions of areas to focus on from the inexhaustible list of environmental issues affecting our ecosystem.
